Dave has enjoyed playing in brass quintets most of his life, and he has written many arrangements for that ensemble (most of them now lost), but it was only in 2011 that he attempted to write original music for this instrumentation. Brass Quintet No. 1 is in the style of 20th-century "contemporary" music. The short movements offer greater challenges to the musicians than their length suggests; particularly the first movement. The third movement is an obvious homage to Paul Hindemith.
