Meeka

June 1997

I hate ultimatums! Especially when I’m forced to give one which means that my initial request became a repeatedly unanswered demand! I wouldn’t say that I’m spoiled but when I bust my ass to keep you satisfied, I expect reciprocation!

“I’m leaving you, Darius! Think it’s a game?!” I snapped after hearing Angie cackling in the background. My boyfriend was at Aaron’s grandmother’s house for Baby Girl’s high school graduation party. Although I was invited personally by Aaron, I didn’t feel that Baby Girl and I were close enough for me to participate in her special occasion.

“Babe! Don’t be like that! Ron invited the crew over to celebrate and I asked you before I came over if you wanted to come with me!” Darius stated. “You expect me to leave just because…”

“Because that bitch is there?! YES!” I exclaimed, waiting for my boyfriend’s rebuttal. As a moment of silence passed between us, I could hear Darius’ friends laughing over a game of spades. “Well?!” My boyfriend remained silent as the noise died down. When I heard a car door close, my boyfriend spoke.

“TaMeeka, I trust you,” Darius said quietly as his 1990 Dodge Charger roared to life.

Taken aback, I said, “Of course, you do! I haven’t done anything wrong!”

“So you’re saying that I’m doing something wrong?!” Darius asked incredulously.

Confused with my boyfriend’s line of questioning, I paused before responding. “Honestly, I’m not sure if I trust Angie and I don’t want you to go back to her.”

“You are the only person that I’ve wanted to sleep with since you gave me your virginity. I’m not cheating on you, TaMeeka,” Darius admitted. “Lately, have I given you a reason to think that I’m cheating on you?!”

“You’re always hanging around that bitch Angie!” I accused my boyfriend.

“And that automatically means I’m fucking her?!” Darius replied angrily.

“Well… no… but…” I stammered, at a loss for words considering Darius never liked quickies and he rarely had more than enough time to get back and forth to work. However, he always managed to run into Angie on the few occasions he went out without me. “Why does she only pop up when I’m not with you?!”

“Because she knows that you don’t like her,” Darius answered before blaring his car horn.

“If she knows I don’t like her, what the fuck makes her think I want her anywhere near my man when I’m not around?!” I snapped.

After shouting obscenities at a fellow motorist, my boyfriend continued. “Look. I’m tired of this shit with you, TaMeeka. Angie is one of my best friends but from now on, just for you, I’ll have a mental restraining order against her. The minute I see her, I’ll leave. And if it’ll make you feel better, I’ll let you know if she approaches me but for you, I’m done with Angie.”

Feeling slightly guilty for making Darius choose between Angie and me, I immediately perked up because I no longer had to worry about that bitch sniffing around my man!

“Are you on your way home?” I asked with excitement building between my legs.

“I just pulled up,” Darius replied dryly as I looked out of the living room window. “Damn! My bad, Babe. Did you want me to bring something for you or the baby?”

“The baby is fine. I just need those sexy lips for me to kiss!” I said as I watched my boyfriend emerge from his vehicle. Usually, he would look up at the window to see me smiling back at him but tonight he simply walked toward the house.

I’ll make it up to him for leaving the party early while making Angie a permanent distant memory!

Prepared to greet Darius at the door with a hug and a kiss, instead I was presented with his icy response.

“We need to talk. Come with me,” he commanded through clenched teeth, leaving the front door open as he returned to his Charger.

Quietly following my boyfriend to his car, I had no clue what Darius wanted to discuss but I tried to remain positive as I sat in the passenger seat before he drove us away from his mother’s house. The silence between us tested my patience as I anticipated what could be the beginning of the ending of my first loving relationship. Unable to bear my boyfriend’s mute drive to wherever we were headed to, I began to plead my case.

“Darius, if I didn’t trust you, I wouldn’t’ve chosen you to be the first and only man I’ve given my body to. If I didn’t trust you, we wouldn’t’ve had unprotected sex since the first time we made love,” I reminded him as I always did when the discussion of trust was brought up. Considering not trusting Angie may have given Darius the impression that I didn’t trust him, I wanted to reassure him where my loyalty stood. “But no matter what you say about her, especially if it’s in defense of her over me, I will NEVER trust Angie!”

As my boyfriend continued silently driving, I became aware that he had driven twice around the block before pulling up to the neighborhood corner store. Parking on the street, Darius turned off the car engine, sighing heavily before stepping outside. Walking around to the passenger side, in a surprising move, Darius opened the door for me. Taking my hand into his, he helped me out of the car. Smiling down at me, my boyfriend leaned against his car, tugging me into a gentle kiss. As we parted lips, Darius looked deep into my eyes, allowing me to get lost in his honey amber hazel pools of seduction.

“I don’t want anyone but you and our children. I love you, TaMeeka.” Darius fought back tears as he continued. “From the moment you told me you were carrying our child, in my heart, we all became a family.” Darius lifted my chin, wiping my tears away. “TaMeeka, I will always love you, I will never leave you, and when the time is right, we will be blessed with all of the children our love can handle. Your inner strength to keep pushing through each day inspires me to do the same. I don’t ever want to lose you and I will spend the rest of my life sharing my love with you and our family. TaMeeka, as long as I have you, I can get through anything! If my mama kicks us out, if I lose my job, if we go bankrupt, if you’re there with me at the end of the day, I’m ahead of the game,” Darius smiled, hugging me closer before kissing me passionately. Just as I was getting lost in his touch, Darius’ cellphone rang in his jeans pocket. “Excuse me, Baby. I’mma take this call and get us some rillos. You want anything from inside the store?”

“Can you please bring me a piña colada Vess and a bag of Red Hot Riplets?” I smiled as Darius opened the car door for me, completely ignoring his phone call.

“Whatever you want is yours, Baby,” my boyfriend smirked before walking into the store.

My ultimatum led to Darius promising me his heart. As I lay beside my boyfriend later that night held close in the safety of his loving arms, I made a promise to my boyfriend.

In exchange for your heart, my body will give you a son.
