Devin
My mother says you can’t always get what you want the way you want it. Still dazed and confused from the previous night’s events, I didn’t feel right being around Darius considering the fact that I wanted to date his girlfriend. I wanted to talk to him privately before I asked Angela out.
“Hi Devin!”
I looked up to see Nina DeVille waving at me. Her sister had her cellphone to her ear as she entered the beauty shop when I waved back.
“Angela!” Nina called into the shop. Her outburst was met by a towel to her face.
“Little girl, if you don’t cut out all of that damn hollering!” snapped one of the stylists.
“Sorry Aunt Torrie!” Nina replied as Angela emerged from the beauty shop.
“Hi Devin!” she replied happily. “Didja have fun at my party? Make any new connections?”
Blushing, I said, “About that…”
“Aww Sweetie, it’s OK if you didn’t connect with anyone,” Angela said consolingly. “I’m gonna have another poly party next month. Maybe you’ll find someone then?”
“Well, you were kinda busy last night so I couldn’t talk to you alone,” I said honestly.
“Oh myyyyy,” Nina purred. “On that note, I’ll just leave you two alone now.”
“What’s up Devin?” Angela asked as she and I sat on a bench outside the beauty shop.
“To be honest, I wanted to talk to Darius first but if you say no, there’s nothing to say to him,” I explained, fumbling my hands together.
Angela was thick in all the right places. She may have been 16 but she had the body of a 25 year old! My initial attraction toward her stemmed from watching her round booty and big boobs bounce around while she practiced with the other cheerleaders. When Angela wasn’t involved in extracurricular activities or hanging with Darius, she was at home studying. The more time I spent hanging around Angela and Darius, the more I wanted to get to know her.
Placing her hands on mine, Angela said, “I can’t say yes if you don’t ask.”
Her husky voice made my dick stiffen! Clearing my throat, I asked, “Can I take you out? I figure after last night, you can date anybody you want and I’ve been feeling you for a while but Darius asked you to Homecoming first then…”
She kissed me!
Giggling, Angela said, “Yes, I’ll go out with you.”
“Oh! OK, but what about Darius? Was I supposed to ask him first?” I asked sincerely. “I’ve never dated another guy’s girl with him knowing about it!”
“So you’re saying you’re a playa?” Angela asked, poking me in the ribs.
Chuckling, I said, “Nah! I mean that this is just…”
“Different?” Angela finished for me. “I know, Sweetie, but I’m here to guide you. You can date any girl you want as long as they know you’re dating me, too. And when you’re ready, you can call me your girlfriend.”
Taken aback, I exclaimed, “Aren’t you my girlfriend now? I just asked you out! You said yes!”
Laughing, Angela put her hand on my cheek. “You have a lot to learn about relationships! No, I’m not your girlfriend. We barely know each other. I don’t even know if I like you enough to call you my boyfriend!”
“How can I get to know you better so I can be your boyfriend?” I asked, scooting closer to Angela.
“You said you want to take me out. What do you want to do on our date?” she inquired.
Thinking, I smiled and said, “I want to take you to the Planetarium!”
Looking shocked, Angela snapped. “Huh? The what?!”
“The Planetarium. I want to show you stars that are almost as beautiful as you!” I said honestly.
“That’s different! Usually boys want to take me to the movies or the skating rink. I’ve never been to the Planetarium before!” Angela gushed.
Pleased that I had impressed her, I suggested, “We can go as soon as they open then afterwards, we can have a picnic lunch in Forest Park.”
“Oooooh you’re so romantic, Devin!” Angela exclaimed.
Blushing, I said, “I’m just doing what my dad taught me. ‘Always treat a woman like a lady,’ he says.”
Nodding her head, Angela said, “I like the way your daddy thinks!”
Just as I was about to ask Angela for her phone number, one of the hairstylists popped her head out of the door to call Angela in to get her hair styled. Without a word, Angela pulled a pen out of her purse, took my hand and wrote her number on my palm.
“Call me tonight, Sweetie,” Angela said with a kiss to my cheek before she went back inside the beauty salon.
Looking at my palm with a grin, I walked home making sure I didn’t smudge the numbers. By the time I arrived home, half the numbers were visible but luckily I had memorized it to put it in my address book. I wanted to call Angela but I had just left her at the beauty shop so she wouldn’t be available for a few hours. Checking myself out in the hall mirror, I debated whether to go to the barbershop to get a lining or call to see where the boys were.
“D and the boys should be done by now. Maybe I’ll run into them later,” I thought to myself as I headed toward the kitchen to fix myself a snack.
“Devin? Is that you?” my father called out from the den at the back of the house.
“Yes, Sir!” I replied as I walked into the kitchen, hoping my presence wasn’t requested.
“Come here, Son!” Mom yelled in response.
Dammit! Snack delayed due to parental interference.
Before I had a chance to decide between grilled cheese or BLT, I went to see what my parents wanted. Walking into the den, my mother was behind the bar mixing margaritas while my father sat in his recliner watching SportsCenter.
“There’s my handsome Baby Boy!” Mom cheered as if she hadn’t seen me just hours ago. However, I wouldn’t want my mother to greet me any other way.
“How was the party? You came in so late and left out of here so early this morning, you didn’t give us the full lowdown!” Dad exclaimed, putting the television on mute to give me his full attention as my mother handed him a salted glass of his favorite alcoholic concoction.
“Mom, Dad… as you know, I’m bisexual,” I smiled, thankful that my parents didn’t freak out when I came out to them on my 13th birthday. “Well, I have a crush on a couple of my friends who are dating each other, Angela and Darius. Last night, they threw a polyamory party.”
“Polyamory, huh?” Daddy sneered. “Son, are you sure you can handle dating a boyfriend let alone a girlfriend at a time like this? What about college?”
“Montell, hear him out, honey,” Mom said as she sat on my father’s lap. She started playing in his beard, one of her calming techniques to keep his blood pressure down.
“I hadn’t thought that far, Dad. I’m still trying to wrap my brain around coming out to my boys then asking one of them out after I’ve already asked his girlfriend out!” I confessed.
“Oh, Honey, you haven’t come out to your friends?” Mom asked with concern, leaping from my father’s lap to stand by my side.
“For what reason?” I stated matter-of-factly. “When I first realized my crush on Darius, he started dating Angela. Then she caught my attention but she was dating my crush! Until last night, I didn’t think it was possible to date Angela or Darius! But I don’t want to ruin my friendship with Darius by telling him how I feel about him.”
Taking me into her arms, Mom said, “That’s the beauty of polyamory, Devin. You’re free to love whoever you want and you happen to love two people who are already open to loving freely! I would suggest talking to them to see how they feel about you. Just be honest with everyone and you’ll not only maintain your friendship but also strengthen your love for each other.”
“The boy needs to focus on school, Georgia!” Dad snapped as he turned the volume up louder than when I first entered the room.
“You don’t have to be rude, Montell,” Mom said sweetly. “We’re still having a conversation with our son.”
Turning the television off, my father looked at me. “Son, your life is gonna be difficult enough when you start dating. You’re only 16. Focus on school.”
Listening to my parents’ advice, more Mom’s than Dad’s, I knew it was time to have a talk with my boys. And my future girlfriend.
