MEEKA
Ever since the day I confessed to my husband that it would be difficult for me to conceive another child, I’ve prayed to God that He would give me one more chance. Next to giving birth to my son, Demetrius, falling in love with and marrying Charles was the highlight of my life. I would do anything to make my husband happy but the one thing I’m afraid I couldn’t do was give him a child.
“I know I shouldn’t worry but what if this is Chico’s deal breaker?” I lamented over brunch with my girls.
Rachael reached across the table and gently squeezed my hand. “Chico won’t leave you if you can’t have his baby, TaMeeka. Give him more credit than that!”
“He might not leave but he won’t be as happy with me either,” I frowned.
“Has he acted differently since you told him you might not be able to conceive?” Layla asked.
“Yes but in a good way,” I smiled. “He’s a lot more affectionate and romantic. While we were in San Antonio for New Year’s, he took me for a stroll by the Riverwalk. It was so beautiful with the lights strung over the water, reflecting in the gentle waves below.”
“Well that’s a good sign, right?” Layla asked.
“It is and you need to see that everything is just fine, TaMeeka,” Rachael said assuringly.
Thankfully, my Girlz had my back. After Rachael hooked up with Alonzo and I got with Chico, she and I became the best of friends. We had the potential to become friends when Rachael was dating her boyfriend Aaron Jones and I was with my baby daddy, Darius Price, Aaron’s best friend. Unfortunately, Darius rarely took me anywhere and I really didn’t connect with Rachael until after Darius and Aaron went to jail.
“If you were single, for the sake of Demetrius growing up with both of his parents, I would be 100% behind you if you wanted to take Darius back but you’re not single, TaMeeka,” Rachael warned when I confessed to her that I didn’t know what to do about my lingering feelings for Darius.
After Darius was released from jail, he assumed that Meechie and I would be waiting for him. Although he knew I was married, Darius continued to pursue me. With every advance he made, I made it clear that my heart was with my husband.
Darius and I never officially broke up. In fact, I thought I was ready to move on from Darius when he got locked up. I saw it as a sign from God to do something better with my life. That’s when I met Chico. My life completely flipped over from my dark storm clouds of depression to bright sunny days of happiness! But now that Charles wanted a baby, I didn’t know how long my bliss would last. As much as I tried not to let it bother me, the fact that I would have difficulty conceiving a child with my husband weighed heavily on my heart.
I was absentmindedly folding laundry when out of the blue my husband asked me “Aren’t you late?”
Confused by the question, I asked, “Late for what?”
“Your period,” he grinned. “It’s been a minute, hasn’t it?”
I was so preoccupied with the thought of conception that I hadn’t noticed that I was over a week late! “It’s probably just stress.”
“From work?” Chico asked with worry in his voice.
“No, from us. I’ve been praying to give you a baby and I don’t want to disappoint you,” I said as tears fell from my eyes.
“TaMeeka, I won’t love you any less if we don’t have a baby together. I love Meechie as if he were my own son and considering it will be hard as hell for you to conceive, I haven’t even thought about it. And neither should you,” Chico said with a kiss. “But if your period doesn’t start today, make an a appointment with your doctor to make sure nothing else is wrong.”
Smiling at my husband’s thoughtfulness, I agreed as he helped me finish folding our laundry.
