Lean Publishing Tip of the Day: Setting Up Your Author Profile

One important aspect of self-publishing is self-presentation: how you write your bio, what pictures of yourself you use, and how you set up your author profile.

One important aspect of self-publishing is self-presentation: how you write your bio, what pictures of yourself you use, and how you set up your author profile.

On Leanpub, the main place you do this is on your author profile page:

When you're setting up your author profile, you won't just be adding your name and uploading a picture.

You'll also need to add your social media account links, which are a key way to grow your audience with new followers, and giving people a chance to get to know you.

You may also want to add an "About Yourself" video from YouTube, which we definitely recommend.

But the most important thing you'll be doing when you set up your profile is writing the "About You" section.

You'll want to tell people key features of your life and career that they'll be interested to know about when they're reading your book - or when they're deciding to buy it in the first place!

Writing a good bio means weaving together the personal and the professional, without going into too much detail - that's what the links to social media are for.

The best thing you can do before writing your bio is to read other authors' self-descriptions, and decide what your readers would like to see.

Finally, reach out for feedback when you're done, and be ready to update what you've done in response!
