Lean Publishing Tip of the Day: Inviting Yourself Onto Podcasts

Before actually reaching out to podcasts, you’ll want to make a list of podcasts you’d like to appear on.

If you’ve written and self-published a book, one great way to get attention and grow your audience is to appear on podcasts.

This is actually a lot easier if you’ve published a non-fiction book, since if you’ve written a book on a real-world subject, there are probably dedicated podcasts out there on your topic, looking for authors as guests.

As Always, Start By Making a List

Before actually reaching out to podcasts, you’ll want to make a list of podcasts you’d like to appear on.

Two of the most obvious places to look are Apple Podcasts and Spotify, where you can search for keywords related to your topic.

You’ll also want to make a list of bestselling authors in your subject area, and search to see what podcasts they’ve been on.

AI is also your friend here; for example, you can explain who you are and what you’ve written about, and ask ChatGPT for recommended podcasts for you to appear on.

Sending Cold Emails to Invite Yourself Onto Podcasts

It’s ok to send cold emails! But don’t get your hopes up - podcasters get a lot of these.

Standing out from the crowd is easy though: not by bragging, but by being professional, and showing you know what things are like from their perspective.

  • Keep your self-invitation cold email short and to the point
  • Absolutely make sure to write the entire email yourself and customize it for the recipient, typically showing that you’ve actually listened to one of their episodes
  • Give a short list of things you can talk about that will be interesting for their audience
