Lean Publishing Tip of the Day: How Leanpub Can Help With Book Manuscript Backups

Basically, every time you preview or publish a new version of your book, we save a version of your manuscript.

How you back up your work will depend on your writing mode, but for all Leanpub writing modes (excluding the Upload writing mode), we give you a “Manuscript Versions” page where you can download old versions of your manuscript.

Basically, every time you preview or publish a new version of your book, we save a version of your manuscript.

And if you’re writing in our Browser writing mode, you’ll also notice that we do occasional autosaves.

You can learn more about using the Manuscript Versions page in this article:

I would like to download a backup of my manuscript from Leanpub. How can I do that?

Keep Your Own Backups Too

When engineers talk about being doubly safe in their designs, they talk about using a “belt and suspenders” approach to design.

We suggest you do that with your book manuscript backups.

You should keep downloaded backups of your book manuscript in at least TWO places.

Saving them on your computer and in the cloud is a great way to do this.

Even emailing copies to yourself is a good way of saving backups, since each email has a date and a subject line.

By adopting a “belt and suspenders” approach to backing up your work, you’re very unlikely to lose anything, and you’ll have peace of mind as well if something goes wrong!
