Lean Publishing Tip of the Day: Finding Your Optimal Writing Process

At Leanpub, we've interacted with thousands of authors around the world, and we've interviewed hundreds at length for our long-form interview podcast.

We've learned a lot from speaking with authors over the years about developing an optimal writing process - especially that the best process for any author will be unique to them.

That's not just because we all have different preferences or attention spans. We're also at different stages of our lives and careers, with a million other factors affecting how we should write.

One New York Times bestselling author Len interviewed as a special guest on the podcast talked about how when she had young children, she would get dressed and go out the front door of her house like she was going somewhere, then secretly crawl in a window to get back into her home office, because if her kids knew she was there, they wouldn't be able to leave her alone!

That's a funny but very human example of how you really need to think hard about how you're going to get your writing time in, and how you're going to be productive.

Some authors set aside time every morning to write; others do it every evening; others do it whenever they have the time.

Some authors love to work in noisy coffee shops full of other people, while others prefer to be quiet and alone.

So, don't feel bad if you're uncertain about what you should do when you get started writing your first book. It's a unique journey for everyone.
