Discovering Antarctica

A young seismologist's first trip to Antarctica

About the Book

I had the immense privilege to travel several times to Antarctica as part of my early career as a research seismologist. During the first of these voyages, from end of December 2007 to February 2008, I kept a blog - Sismordia - Seismology at Concordia - mostly in order to let my family and friends know how I was. Shortly after returning, I compiled the blog posts into a photo book, that you can download for free.

This book is a full re-write of the blog posts and the photo book, and includes previously unpublished images. Unless noted, all photographs in this book were taken by JY, AD or myself.

Alessia Maggi

I am a seismologist working for Institut de Physique du Globe in Strasbourg, France (IPGS), a research laboratory within the Ecole et Observatoire des Sciences de la Terre, which is a department of the University of Strasbourg, co-supported by CNRS.  During my early career, I ran my institute’s southern-hemisphere seismology program, which included managing three seismological observatory stations in the Southern Indian Ocean and two in Antarctica (at Dumont d’Urville, in Adelie Land, and Concordia, in the interior of the East Antarctic plateau). Also during that time, my institute applied for and obtained funding for a seismology experiment en Antarctica (CASE-IPY: Concordia, Antarctica, Seismic Experiment for the International Polar Year).
