About the Books
A field-tested guide to workshops that actually teach
The best workshops change what people can do. Days later, they're working differently, behaving differently - because something genuinely landed, and stayed.
That's a higher bar than a lively room. Energy, conversation, plenty happening - all good signs, but engagement isn't the same as understanding.
Understanding is what lasts. The difference is design. And design is learnable.
Workshop Mastery is how you get there.
Almost every workshop and tutorial built on the approach in this book has won a best workshop award - at conferences, across industries, repeatedly.
Not because of personality or high energy. Because of how the sessions were designed - with learning at the centre, not activity.
This book codifies that approach. The structure, the thinking, the small decisions that determine whether people leave understanding something - or just feeling like they did.
Workshops are not simply meetings. And they are not performances. At their best, they are carefully designed learning environments - where understanding deepens, thinking shifts, and people leave able to do something differently.
This book is a practical guide to that craft. Not gimmicks. Not icebreakers. Not slide techniques. Just the hard work of helping people understand something properly, and the act of becoming a great workshop teacher.
Engagement feels good but understanding changes behaviour. That distinction is what this book is built around.
The material draws from workshops taught, tested and refined over time - focusing on clarity and structure, pacing and flow, room dynamics, and the decisions that shape whether learning sticks.
It moves between planning and practice: shaping the flow of a session, arranging physical and cognitive space, knowing when to speak and when to step back, recognising the difference between engagement and understanding, applying different teaching techniques and sharing how to develop presence and confidence as a teacher in workshops.
Three practical tools included with the book:
Designed to support preparation and reflection in real sessions.
This isn't about becoming a more entertaining facilitator.
It's something more equine - and more important: becoming someone who can teach clearly, and help ideas stick.

A practical guide to turning ideas into talks people remember
Every great talk starts the same way: with a good idea, carefully shaped.
Zero to Keynote follows that idea the whole way — from the first spark, through the framing and the structure, through a conference proposal that earns a yes, into a talk, into slides if you're using them, and on through rehearsal and refinement until it's ready. The idea keeps changing form, and this is the craft of shaping it well at every stage.
Then there's everything around the talk that nobody sees: walking the stage before you're on it, working with your nerves rather than against them, handling questions from the room, knowing how to decompress when it's done, enjoying the event also. Same craft. Same care.
Underneath all of it run the foundational aspects of effective communication — ensuring you are clear on the purpose of the talk, the audience and the context in which the talk will happen. Get these right and everything else gets simpler. Because a talk is mostly the ninety per cent that happens before the stage.
Get that part right, and the moment you step up takes care of itself — seamless, calm, powerful. Your audience has given you their time, energy and attention; this is how you give them a great talk in return.
And here's the idea worth holding onto: any talk can be delivered as a keynote. The label on your slot doesn't decide that. You do.
Two decades of speaking and teaching inside organisations and at conferences — as an international keynote speaker, and a trainer whose conference sessions have repeatedly won best-of-event awards.
Not because of stage presence or performance energy, but because of how the talks were prepared and shaped.
Zero to Keynote is that preparation, written down.
The material moves through the full lifecycle of a talk — developing a point of view rooted in experience, forming a clear through-line, writing submissions, shaping ideas into narratives people can follow, preparing deliberately, and delivering with steadiness rather than bravado.
Logistics, nerves, questions from the room, and the small practicalities of conferences are treated as part of the same craft — not afterthoughts.
Most of the work happens before the stage.
The tone is practical and human.
Many readers return to particular sections when preparing new talks or refining existing ones — using it as a working reference rather than a single linear read.
Not to turn you into a performer. Something subtler — and more useful. Clearer thinking. Calmer preparation. A way of speaking that remains recognisably your own.
Because the goal isn't to impress.
It's to be understood — and remembered.

You already know things.
You have ideas, experience, opinions and questions, and things you need other people to understand. The hard part is getting what's in your head to land in someone else's the way you meant it.
That's communication. A message understood first time. A difficult conversation that stays constructive. A meeting that moves something forward. An email that gets read, and acted on.
Most of us learn it by habit and trial and error, copying the people around us whether their habits work or not.
But communication is a set of behaviours, and behaviours can be understood, practised and improved.
This workbook is a practical guide to doing exactly that. It's the companion to The Everyday Communication Workshop, which I've run more than two hundred times. It covers the same ground in the same order, and you work through it at your own pace.
I've rewritten it from the first page to the last.
The language is plainer, the research is checked against what the evidence says today, and the stock photos are replaced with drawn figures.
Every chapter now ends with pages to write on, and there's a two-page cheat sheet to print and keep. If you bought an earlier edition, the new one is yours free.
All communication has a purpose, an audience and a context. It sounds almost too simple, and that's the point.
Most of us communicate with only a loose sense of why, think a little about who we're talking to, and barely consider where the message will land. Paying attention to all three is enough to set you apart.
Everything else in the workbook builds on that principle, chapter by chapter:
Ten habits to come back to whenever communication matters: be enthusiastic; the receiver does the communicating; stories go where facts can't; don't waste people's time; practice makes permanent; people remember how you made them feel; your body is talking too; people listen to those who sound like them; how you feel is how you communicate; and listening is the greatest compliment.
This isn't a book to read once and put on the shelf. Each chapter ends with exercises and space to work through your own habits and situations. You'll practise the head nod, learn the colour of a colleague's eyes, plan a meeting agenda and rewrite your last email so the request comes first.
The aim isn't to make you better at communication in theory. It's to give you things you can use tomorrow.
It's for anyone whose work depends on being understood, which is nearly everyone's. It's especially useful if you've just started managing people, you live in your inbox, you spend half your week in meetings, or someone has told you, "It's not what you said, it's how you said it."
Communication sits underneath almost everything we do at work: ideas, decisions, meetings, feedback, relationships, writing, leadership. When it improves, all of those have a better chance of working.
You don't need a personality makeover or years of training. You need to understand what's happening, and practise doing it better. That's what this workbook is for.
