Off on a Comet!

or Hector Servadac

About the Book

This fantastical tale begins near Gibraltar, when a comet called Gallia sideswipes the earth and picks up a chunk of land along with 37 inhabitants. When they realize what has happened, the travellers—including a French legionnaire and his sidekick—begin a research expedition aboard a ship and discover a host of unusual and unexpected phenomena.

First published in 1877 in France, and translated into English later that same year, Jules Verne's Off on a Comet! had the original title Hector Servadac. This turn of the century sci-fi adventure is true to Verne's aim to create a new form of novel which combines scientific fact with fiction.

About the Author

Tilman Queitsch
Jules Verne

Jules Gabriel Verne (February 8, 1828 - March 24, 1905) was a French author who pioneered the science-fiction genre. He is best known for novels such as Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873). Verne wrote about space, air, and underwater travel before air travel and practical submarines were invented, and before practical means of space travel had been devised. He is the third most translated author in the world, according to Index Translationum. Some of his books have been made into films. Verne, along with H. G. Wells, is often popularly referred to as the "Father of Science Fiction." — from wikipedia.org
